Mayor and City Council

The Mayor is elected for a term of two years. The City Council consists of five City Council members elected at large, elected for terms of four years. Each position's term begins on January 1st of the year following the election.

City Council Meetings

The City Council meets at City Hall (198 2nd Street) the first Monday of each month at 7 pm, excluding holidays (meetings are then on Tuesday). Citizens are welcome to attend.

Accumulation of Refuse

Accumulation of rubbish or trash is considered a nuisance in Calamus. Therefore, do not accumulate junk or refuse around your house or on your property.

Animal Control

All dogs six (6) months or older shall be vaccinated against rabies. The owner shall maintain in his or her possession a veterinarian's certificate showing that the dog has been vaccinated. It shall be a violation of this Ordinance for any dog to not be vaccinated against rabies. Evidence of proper vaccination shall be maintained by the owner of every dog. (Code of Iowa, Sec. 351.33) (Ord. 2003-1, Passed December 1, 2003)

Building Numbers

The numbering of buildings are required. (Code of Iowa, Sec. 364.12(3)(d)) Display Building Numbers. The owner shall place or cause to be installed and maintained on the principal building the assigned number in a conspicuous place to the street in figures not to be less than two and one-half inches in height and of a contrasting color with their background. (Code of Iowa, Sec 364.12) Failure to Comply. If an owner refuses to number a building as herein provided, or fails to do so for a period of thirty days after being notified in writing by the City to do so, the City may proceed to place the assigned number on the principal building and assess the costs against the property for collection in the same manner as a property tax. (Code of Iowa, Sec. 364.12)

Junk and Abandoned Vehicles

Junk and Abandoned vehicles are not allowed to be stored on your property and shall not be parked on a public street in one spot for more than 24 hours.

Lawn and Brush

Dense growth of all weeds, grasses, vines, brush, or other vegetation in the City so as to constitute a health, safety, or fire hazard including any City owned property between the abutting property line and the street right-of-way. (Code of Iowa, Sec. 657.2(11)) If not in compliance, a notice will be given by the City to clear the vegetation and/or mow the grass. The City will then clear the vegetation and/or mow the property and bill the resident accordingly.

Snow Removal on Sidewalks

Snow and/or ice removal on sidewalks must take place within 24 hours of a deposit of accumulation or the City will clear the snow, without notice to you, and bill you accordingly through property taxes.
