Water, Sewer, Garbage and Recycling

Garbage and recycling is picked up every Tuesday morning beginning at 7am (if Tuesday is a holiday, then garbage and recycling pickup will be the following day)

Garbage is picked up curbside

Recycling is picked up curbside. Everything can be placed into one recycle bin and does not have to be separated. Call (563) 246-2755, option 2, to receive a free recycle bin.

  • Corrugated cardboard boxes must be broken down to 3-ft. x 3-ft. or less.
  • Food and beverage glass only (clear, green and brown).
  • Food and beverage tin cans must be clean and have labels removed.
  • #1 through #7 plastic containers.
  • Do NOT bundle newspapers or magazines with twine, string or tape - place loose in bin.

The following items are not accepted:

  • Plastic films and bags (Take plastic grocery bags to local stores)
  • Containers for hazardous materials
  • All Styrofoam products
  • Lids containing Styrofoam inserts
  • Medical supplies
  • Plastic without a recycling symbol
  • Large, bulky or oversized items

The city of Calamus provides water, sewer, garbage and recycling. New residents are required to pay a $100.00 customer deposit, before service can be started. Utility bills shall be due on the 15th of the month following the period for which service is billed.  Payment shall be made to the city clerk.  Bills become delinquent after the 16th of the month in which they are due and bills paid after said day shall have added a penalty of 10% of the amount of the bill for service. If service is discontinued for nonpayment of fees and charges, for vacationers, or for the violation of any Ordinance, a fee of $100.00 shall be paid to the City Clerk-Treasurer in addition to the rates or charges then due before such service is restored.  If any such service charge is not paid within sixty (60) days from the date it is due, the same shall constitute a lien upon the premises served by said municipal system, which said lien shall be collected in the same manner as taxes. (Code of Iowa, Sec. 384.84(2))

Payment methods include: check, money order and/or cash. Payments can be mailed to P.O. Box 248, Calamus, IA 52729, or placed in the drop box on the north side of City Hall at 198 2nd St. Automatic payments can also be organized by filling out the Debit Authorization Form.

Utility Service Auto Debit Authorization

Water meters are read monthly. The base rate is $35.00 plus $4.00 per 1000 gallons used.

Sewer is read monthly. The base rate is $40.00 plus $1.00 per 1000 gallons used.

Garbage is $13.52 per month flat fee.
